Your Child and the DHA Fish Oil Advantage

How does fish oil benefit children, infants and pregnant mothers?  Here are summaries of some clinical science and research findings* about Omega 3, DHA, EPA and fish oil supplements with links to journal studies below.*

  • Research findings linking fish consumption and higher cognitive test scores.
  • Studies of school children scoring higher in tests after being given daily fish oil supplements.
  • Research showing DHA improves neurodevelopment of prematurely born infants.
  • Authoritative observations that the failure to ingest enough DHA may cause impaired brain development in newborn children.

Higher Test Scores

Higher fish consumption linked to higher test scores in teenage males.
“Swedish researchers have found a clear link between fish consumption and higher cognitive scores among teenage males. According to a new study published in Acta Paediatrica, a monthly international, peer-reviewed pediatric research journal, 15 year old males who ate fish at least once a week had higher cognitive skills at age 18 than those who ate it less frequently. When the young men ate fish more than once a week, their combined intelligence scores were, on average, almost 11 percent higher than those who ate fish less than once a week. . . . Oily fish (such as sardines, anchovies, mackerel, and salmon) are the only known natural sources of Omega-3 EPA/DHA.

. . . [A]lthough Omega-3 EPA/DHA is vital to overall good health, the human body is not able to produce it on its own, so supplementation is required, either by eating oily fish or foods fortified with Omega-3 EPA/DHA, or by taking fish oil supplements.” (Ocean Nutrition Canada, “Fish Fuels Young Men's Brains,” PR Newswire, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, July 6, 2009 citing Maria AI Åberg, Nils  Åberg, Jonas  Brisman, Rosita  Sundberg, Anna  Winkvist, Kjell  Torén, Fish intake of Swedish male adolescents is a predictor of cognitive performance, Centre for Brain Repair and Rehabilitation, Institute for Neuroscience and Physiology at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, S-405 30 Gothenburg, Sweden, telephone + 46-31-685914)

School children given daily fish oil score higher in tests.

“[Y]oungsters dramatically boosted their performance simply by taking a daily dose of oil. . . The youngsters were given the omega-3 fish oil containing fatty acids EPA and DHA, believed to be important for brain and eye function. Head Richard Whitfield [Toft Hill Primary School in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, United Kingdom] said: 'I think the supplement gives children that little extra bit of confidence and concentration and it's all about giving them the chance to achieve their potential.' . . . In the national Standard Assessment Tests taken in July, 78 per cent of the youngsters were expected to hit the national average grade in math. But the result was a staggering 92 per cent, with half the pupils passing at the highest grade.  In English 68 per cent were predicted to reach the average, but the result was 92 per cent.” (Jeremy Armstrong, “Off The Scale; Pupils given daily fish oil score HIGHER in tests.. and the struggling school team WINS league,” The Mirror, London, England, September 13, 2007)

Improved Brain Development in Infants

DHA improves neurodevelopment of prematurely born infants.
“Tripling the level of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in the early diet of some of the smallest infants born prematurely improved the neurodevelopment outcome of girls, according to a study published in the January 14, 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

DHA is an important nutrient for brain, eye and overall infant development that is normally found in mother's milk and, in recent years, in infant formulas...

'Infants born prematurely do not have time to accumulate DHA to the same level as their full-term counterparts and this research indicates the requirements of DHA may be even higher for pre-term infants than previously thought,' said Dr. Maria Makrides, the study's lead researcher and Deputy Director of the Women and Children's Health Research Institute, Adelaide, and professor of human nutrition, University of Adleaide in Australia." (“New Study: Higher DHA Levels Improve Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Premature Girls,” PR Newswire, Martek Biosciences Corporation, Columbia, Maryland, January 26, 2009 citing findings in Maria Makrides; Robert A. Gibson; Andrew J. McPhee; Carmel T. Collins; Peter G. Davis; Lex W. Doyle; Karen Simmer; Paul B. Colditz; Scott Morris; Lisa G. Smithers; Kristyn Willson; Philip Ryan, Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Preterm Infants Fed High-Dose Docosahexaenoic Acid: A Randomized Controlled Trial, JAMA, January 14, 2009; 301: 175 – 182)

DHA in wild salmon critical for baby both in womb and during infancy.  “When a woman first learns that she's pregnant, she begins to think differently about the foods that go into her mouth [optimum dietary foods during pregnancy], and eventually become the foundation of her baby's health. Catherine Jones, an award-winning cookbook author and Rose Ann Hudson, RD, LD, a perinatal nutritionist have written Eating For Pregnancy: The Essential Nutrition Guide and Cookbook for Today's Mothers-to-Be.

"A top food in their book is wild salmon, known for its brain and eye boosting developmental properties (DHA). DHA they write is critical for a baby both in the womb and during infancy. In fact, they even list it as a top 10 food for conception.  DHA is the main component of the nervous system, of which the brain is a part."

"The brain is 70% developed at birth and continues growing afterward through the preschool years. DHA may be beneficial in the prevention of ADHD, as it is a crucial factor in brain development. (PubMed, Mar 2005) (Univ Maryland Medical Center).” (Kelly Jad'on, “DHA, Crucial To Infant Brain Development, May Prevent ADHD, Depression,” Basilandspice.com, August 30, 2009)

Failure to ingest enough DHA may cause impaired brain development in newborn children.  “One of the most striking discoveries in recent years is the finding that the omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is required for optimal brain development during fetal and early infant life. In fact, failure for women to establish adequate DHA nutritional status has been strongly implicated in impaired brain development of their offspring, manifesting as lower IQ and an increased propensity for learning disabilities."

"The problem stems from the fact that the fetus is dependent upon the mother's body for much of its DHA requirement. After birth, infants continue to require DHA from breast milk during the first three months of life in order for optimal brain development to continue.” (James P Meschino, DC, MS, “Essential Fats for Child Brain Development,” Dynamic Chiropractic, December 2, 2008)  See other research and clinical findings on DHA and pregnancy.

Most women do not ingest sufficient amounts of DHA during pregnancy.  “[T]he fetal body and the infant body (for at least the first three months of life) are incapable of synthesizing sufficient DHA to satisfy their needs for optimal brain development. Thus, it is imperative for women to ingest preformed DHA prior to becoming pregnant, during pregnancy and during their child's first three months of life (assuming they are breast-feeding) in order to provide their children with the best opportunity to achieve ideal brain development and function. . . . [M]ost women do not ingest sufficient amounts of DHA and there is no way to compensate once this critical time period have elapsed. Feeding the child DHA does not substantially affect brain development to the degree possible during pregnancy and the first three months of life.”  (James P Meschino, DC, MS, “Essential Fats for Child Brain Development,” Dynamic Chiropractic, December 2, 2008)

Higher sustained attention levels for children whose mothers take DHA.  “Children whose mothers received docosahexaenoic acid supplements for 4 months post partum performed better on standardized tests of sustained attention at 5 years of age compared with those whose mothers received placebo, Craig Jensen, M.D., said at the Second World Congress of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.” (Heidi Splete, “DHA may bring attention benefit for children,” Pediatric News, Second World Congress of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Paris, France, May 1, 2005)

DHA supplementation during pregnancy may provide four key health benefits.  [R]esearch results show that an increased intake of DHA through supplementation during pregnancy may help:  1) Prevent preterm delivery, 2) Increase head circumference and birth weight, 3) Benefit infant problem solving at nine months and infant visual acuity at four months of age, and 4) Prevent depression during pregnancy and postpartum.  (Kelly Jad'on, “DHA, Crucial To Infant Brain Development, May Prevent ADHD, Depression,” Basilandspice.com, August 30, 2009)

Dementia Fish Oil

Fish oil consumption may reduce the likelihood of dementia.  “Data from studies in adults suggest that consumption of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the form of fish oil may reduce the likelihood of dementia in old age. This ongoing study has evaluated the visual and neural development in breast-fed children whose mothers received either 200 mg of DHA daily or a placebo for 4 months post partum at 4, 8, 12, 18, 30, and 60 months of age, said Dr. Jensen of Texas Children's Hospital in Houston." Dementia fish oil. Fish oil packs a wallop of benefits. Fish oil is ultimately the healthiest fat around because it has profound anti-inflammatory properties.  It might even be the healthiest medicine around, since it packs a wallop of benefits without any of the long-term side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs (such as death).  In fact, the only side effect of fish oil may be that it makes you smarter.” (1)

Fish oil helps your brain and heart.  “[Y]ou can feel better in two weeks. If you walk 30 minutes a day for two weeks, you'll feel better. If you take DHA [the omega- 3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid, found commonly in fish oil] -- it's only 10 cents a day, $3 a month -- and it helps your brain and heart. There are really easy steps."
